If I Could Turn Back Time

What do Cher, Suzanne Somers, and Susan Sarandon all have in common? They are all eligible for social security! On Monday, the nation’s “first” baby boomer born January 1, 1946 signed up to receive Social Security payments. It’s a little unsettling to think that the self-admitted “plastic surgery poster girl” Cher is up for social security.

"Yes, I have had a facelift, but who hasn't? … I asked my 90-year-old grandmother what she wanted for her 90th birthday and she wanted collagen in her lips!” said Cher back in September to Let Life In Magazine.

We love it but we think that she meant her mother. It turns out that Cher is not alone. With her fellow baby boomers, facelifts are the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure for men and women over age 55. At BHI, we love doing facelifts because there is a wide range of different types of facelifts and procedures that can be performed depending on the individual patient and the aspects of the aging face that apply to them. Rumor has it that Cher might be having rejuvenation in anticipation of her new Vegas show. Thanks Cher, for reminding us that we don’t have to look our physical age, but the age we feel, and still get our social security!

First Super Neck!

According to Us Weekly, former supermodel Janice Dickinson has gone under the knife once more. We don’t know if that is true or not, but they are saying that she underwent a "mini neck lift."

We don’t think that Janice is old by any means, but many people are turning to plastic surgeons to eliminate the saggy neck skin under the chin that says, "I'm old." Though it used to be part of a face-rejuvenation procedure, tightening the skin in the neck in an hour-long visit is becoming a popular procedure unto itself.

The reality TV regular, 52, has made no effort to hide her love of plastic surgery and has undergone numerous operations, including a facelift and a boob job, to preserve her youthful looks. If she did just get a necklift, congratulations on taking care of business.

Celebrity gossip sites say that Demi Moore has spent $3 million for plastic surgery of not just her face but also her knees. She denies reports and we believe her since in the past she has said:

"I don't see me getting oodles of stuff done, but for some things it's a godsend. After three kids, gravity takes its toll and everything heads south, so it's an option."

We don’t know that plastic surgery is a “godsend” but we definitely think it’s a great option to people who want to look their best. And Demi, you look terrific!

It’s in the Stars

We found it hard to believe but Michelle Pfeiffer played an aging hag hoping to find the secret of eternal youth in her new fantasy film, "Stardust." Michelle talked to the press in London about her thoughts on aging and plastic surgery in Hollywood and said that she doesn't see anything wrong with a little nip and tuck here and there.

We certainly agree, especially with someone as gorgeous as Michelle, that a little nip and tuck here and there is the perfect way to go for a rested and rejuvenated look. Too often people judge plastic surgery by the horror stories, but at BHI we provide happily ever afters.

Best Hair and Now Top Face

In Beverly Hills and throughout Los Angeles, everyone is an actor/actress. At BHI, we are not easily impressed but we can’t help getting a little star struck. Forbes.com's first-ever analysis of top-selling famous faces placed Jennifer Aniston as the number one top face. Jennifer has been “most desired hair” on our Hollywood’s Hottest Looks survey in the past but we have a feeling that this year Jennifer’s face is going to be one of our most requested features.

Jennifer has admitted to having rhinoplasty to correct her deviated septum back in January. With a deviated septum, patients complain of difficulty breathing easily, or of sleeping disorders such as snoring or sleep apnea. Jennifer says, “Best thing I ever did. I slept like a baby for the first time in years.” A good night’s rest and a beautiful nose what more can the top-selling face ask for?

Some Like It Hot!

If we had been doing our Hollywood's Hottest Looks survey back in the day when Tony Curtis was frolicking with Marilyn Monroe and Jack Lemmon, we are certain he would have been nominated to our Most Desired Male looks section for his hair, his eyes, his nose and his chin. A Hollywood icon and now 82 years old, Tony is as vibrant as ever and even discussed his Botox treatment on ET (Entertainment Tonight) last week! Way to go Tony!

Blame Canada!

While our title is a funny play on the South Park movie, we at BHI dislike these stories. They make our profession look bad and it’s another reminder for patients to check their doctor’s qualifications before undergoing anything as serious as surgery. In Canada, another fatal case has raised concern over cosmetic surgery procedures being performed by non-licensed plastic surgeons. According to reports, a Toronto real estate agent and mother had liposuction at the Toronto Cosmetic Clinic and died. She underwent the operation in a clinic that was run by a family physician, not a plastic surgeon.

Apparently in Canada, Canadian general practitioners may perform aesthetic surgery under less stringent rules than their certified plastic surgeon counterparts. We know that sometimes it is easier to go to the doctor with the discounted rates but surgery is no laughing matter and board certification counts! At BHI, we go through stringent Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care certification to ensure that our facility is safe for our patients.

America's Next Non-Smoker?

So this season, Tyra Banks has declared that America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) will be a smoke-free season. Seems to us at BHI that Tyra is going for do-gooder status this season, first ANTM goes GREEN (no more Hummer Limos driving the girls around) and now smoke free. For the first shoot, it was a composite image of each of the ANTM hopefuls made up to look glamorous as she sits smoking in front of a mirror. Then, special effects makeup will show what smoking does to the face. About time the modeling industry stops glamorizing smoking!

Yes, yes, smoking is bad for the body but we all know that what really matters is the face. Kidding aside, at the BHI we let our patients know that smoking causes premature wrinkling around the eyes and the mouth, increased facial capillaries and a pale, grayish tint to the skin. After five years of smoking, 25 year old models who smoke look much older! No wonder they have to start so young. In order to correct the premature aging from smoking, they will need regular regimens of Botox, Fillers, and Chemical Peels with a possible face lift depending on how long they have been smoking. So let that be a lesson to models, model hopefuls, and everyone else that smokes, smoking is not sexy nor is it worth your looks! Can't wait Wednesday for the next episode.

Yes, We Read These Magazines Too!

We, at Beverly Hills Institute, don’t mind commenting on people who admit to plastic surgery but we never want to “out” someone if they haven’t said so themselves, especially if they never had it done. Yet, whenever In Touch Weekly does Body News, we can’t help but wonder who has and who hasn’t.

In Touch “outs” Megan Fox as having some type of cosmetic procedure to smooth out her nose. No matter if she did or didn’t, Megan’s face is gorgeous. We know patients are going to want her Hollywood’s Hottest Looks!

Hottest Woman on the Set of “Dirty Sexy Money”?

As plastic surgeons, we don’t have much time for television but we couldn’t help ourselves – we had to watch the new Wednesday night drama, Dirty Sexy Money, on ABC. Very Dynasty of the 21st century, we think.

We just heard that Patrick Darling (Billy Baldwin) the oldest son of the Darling clan, who also happens to be a New York Attorney General who’s running for the U.S. Senate (whoa, that’s a mouthful) will be having a love affair with a… transgender character. The actress is Candis Cayne, who is a transgender herself. What a breakthrough for the Transgender community.

She is a beautiful woman and while she isn’t our client, we have been creating these natural appearing females for decades. We know that to achieve that level of feminization, it does require quite a bit of facial plastic surgery. As facial plastic surgeons here at Beverly Hills Institute, we know quite a bit about the many procedures that the women of the transgender community need in order to feel beautiful. Like we always say, whatever we can do to help a woman feel and look her best, we will do it.

US Weekly and Beverly Hills Institute…All Celebrity, All the Time!

Interesting…we were just talking about Heidi Montag and now she has a whole layout in US Weekly. She’s quoted saying:

“People would say, ‘You have such a big nose!’ And they’d make fun of me for being so flat, and say mean boy things, like, “If you nailed two nails in a board, they would be bigger than you are.” I was tormented…Whatever women need to do to feel sexy, they should do.”

We are so on top of celebrity news! We like a natural looking nose and agree with the current emphasis on natural results, which has been our philosophy for almost 30 years. Love the look, Heidi!

Bringing Sexy Back!

So production has started on Sex and the City (SATC), and the ladies at the Beverly Hills Institute and around the world are jumping for joy. Out May 2008, it looks like Charlotte is having babies and, of course, Mr. Big and Carrie are still on. We can’t wait until more details are leaked.

Miranda once asked, “Whatever happened to aging gracefully?” to which Carrie replied, “It got old.” We agree! We say look the age you feel. The women of SATC, ages ranging from 40’s to early 50’s, have never looked as good as they do now. We constantly have women coming in asking for their fresh and natural look. We know that ultimately looking the age you feel has a lot to do with rejuvenation and subtle cosmetic surgery.

The Hills Are Alive…With Plastic Surgery?

We admit it! We are addicted to reality television and one of our favorite shows is The Hills on MTV. Makes us feel young at heart, the drama, the partying and of course, Hollywood’s Hottest Looks. These girls are beautiful and if they are getting plastic surgery, which we aren’t saying they did, GOOD JOB!

While Heidi Montag has admitted to rhinoplasty, people are saying that Jen Bunney has also had some work done on her nose. Hmmm, friends who have plastic surgery together, stay together? Rhinoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed. We, at the Beverly Hills Institute, tailor the procedure to meet the individual needs of each patient’s nose and face making sure to get a more desirable, natural, non-surgical shape. Like we said, if Jen Bunney got a nose job, GOOD JOB with the natural appearance.

A Queen is a Queen, is a Queen!

Even though Cate Blanchett is at the top of our Hollywood’s Hottest Looks list, we don‘t know that Elizabeth I would have made it. With Elizabeth: The Golden Age coming to the big screen, it brings to mind something we have been saying for years. Elizabeth I had a huge forehead!

It’s been said that if she didn’t like a particular picture she would have destroyed it, “Her Majesty commands all manner of persons to stop doing portraits of her until a clever painter has finished one which all other painters can copy.” Smart Lady, too bad nowadays people don’t have that option. We recommend patients get the Fleming/Mayer Hairline Lowering Procedure. Some unlucky women have a congenitally high hairline, giving them a masculine look resulting in a balding appearance. For those patients, the Fleming/Mayer Hairline Lowering Procedure has been developed to lower the hairline and to bring the proportions of the face and hairline into balance.

NOSE JOB AND BROW LIFT AND EMMY, OH MY!

So, this past weekend we were watching the Emmy’s and guess who caused some controversy? EMMY AWARD WINNING KATHY GRIFFIN! Whatever your feelings toward Kathy are, we love her! Congratulations on the Emmy, Kathy!

We have to admit, Kathy has guts compared to most of Hollywood - whether A list or D list. She has confessed, loud and proud, to multiple different cosmetic procedures including: nose job, brow lift, Botox®, chemical skin peel, and liposuction! Kathy, like Nicole Kidman, had a high forehead and low eyebrows. So when Kathy gleefully dishes dirt on celebrities, we are happy that she also dishes on the many attributes of cosmetic surgery!

Sarah Michelle Geller is A-OK

Once asked, "What do you think of plastic surgery, and would you consider it in thirty years?" Sarah Michelle Geller said, "I can't comment now what I'm going to do ten, fifteen years from now." And even has said, "But I'm OK with nose jobs if you get up every day and look in the mirror and your nose makes you unhappy. If you think that's the answer, by all means do it."

At 31, we think she looks amazing but unfortunately, her eyebrows are low, meaning that she is someone that most likely won’t age well as her brows go down.

Typically, the mistake most people make when they want to correct the low brow is an upper eyelid Blepharoplasty when the correct procedure for her would be a Hairline Forehead Lift. We see that very often in our practice. Only a Hairline Forehead Lift will correct the brows without raising the hairline and eliminate the eyelid hooding at the same time. Let's hope, when she decides to get plastic surgery she doesn’t make the obvious mistake.

Kate, Paris, Reese and Great Skin

Kate Hudson, Paris Hilton and Reese Witherspoon are names not often listed together, but this year they were all voted top Hottest Hollywood Skin by our patients. Let's face it, not all skin types are created equal but the natural, low maintenance look that is popular make it necessary to have great skin. We recommend macrodermabrasion, a form of skin resurfacing with NO down time.

This treatment uses sea salt and a positive pressure machine to remove dead surface layers of the skin helping fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation as well as mild acne scarring. We think that this is the perfect treatment for people who don't want to worry about leaving the house without make up.

There's No Faking Kiera Knightly

Kiera Knightly was recently complaining about how much airbrushing is done to her when she poses for women's magazines. We all know that magazines are notorious for retouching but no one can fake her slanting eyes, knife-edge cheekbones and that almost irritatingly perfect upper lip. No wonder for the past 3 years she had made it on to Hollywood's Hottest Looks.

While youth is on her side, we have noticed that high cheekbones for women never go out of style. As we age, many patients come in and ask to lose the "sunken-in" appearance and minimize the folds at the sides of the mouth. We often suggest a cheeklift on those patients to correct muscle sagging. This procedure allows us to lift the cheek area and return a more youthful fullness to the cheeks.

Nicole Kidman: High Class, Low Brow

"Low browed" isn’t normally what people think of when they think of Nicole Kidman but we have to say it. Yes, Nicole is the epitome of refinement and taste but she has what is called ptosis, meaning literally having eyebrows that are very low. As we all know, age lowers the brow, in turn aging us even more... bad news for Nicole. Added to low brows, Nicole also has a high hair line.

A mistake in correcting her low brow would be an endoscopic forehead lift, which would only make the problem worse by raising her hairline even more. Thanks again to our commitment to finding the best procedures for every person’s individual face, we developed a technique that allows the hair to grow through and in front of the hairline incision, so the hairline incision is completely undetectable diminishing her low brow state at the same time.

Getting Cheeky With The Ladies

George Clooney, Johnny Depp and Eddie Murphy... they don’t seem to have problem getting the ladies, so what is it that they all have in common? According to our annual survey, Hollywood’s Hottest Looks, its CHEEKBONES. What is it about strong cheek bones in men that make all the girls swoon? At Beverly Hills Institute, we constantly have men coming in asking to look like George, Johnny or Eddie, not knowing what they really want is prominent cheekbones.

Prominent cheek bones improve facial contour and accentuate the eyes. With 60% increase in men having cosmetic procedures, men no longer see plastic surgery as a woman issue. As men age, men lose volume in their face and cheekbones become less prominent. There are different types of implants used for the cheekbones that are customized for each patient to get them lady killer looks.
